Program Overview

Belgium has been referred to as a “dance capital.” This is a remarkable accolade, given that the size of Belgium is roughly the size of the state of Maryland, yet is home to at least three internationally renowned touring companies, including Rosas (artistic director Anna Theresa de Keersmaeker), Eastman (artistic director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui), and Ultima Vez (artistic Director Wim Vandekeybus). Brussels is also home to the annual May dance festival named Kunstenfestivaldesarts which will be taking place during the dates of this international program.

Travelers will visit three dance centers in and near Brussels to take class with different contemporary artists. We will visit Tictac Arts Center for a class with David Zambrano in “flying low.” We will also visit STUK in nearby Leuven, Belgium, for a class with the outstanding Belgian choreographer Alexander Vantournhout (or one of his company members). We will visit danscentrumjette for a class with Roxane Huilmand (formerly of Rosas). In addition to these classes, we will attend three dance performances connected to the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, giving us an opportunity to expand our understanding of self and expression of cultural values through dance. During the day, our group will tour the renowned Renée Magritte Museum, The Royal Museum of Central Africa, the Monnaie Theater, a castle in the town of Ghent, and take a boat ride through the canals of the medieval town of Bruges. There will also be plenty of time to taste delicious Belgian chocolate, waffles, and frites (French fries).

Students must be enrolled in a technique class during the Spring 2025 semester to participate in this program. Technique classes include: DANC 224, DANC 220/221/222; DANC 320/321/322; DANC 420/421/422/426/428
