This program is designed for students who want to improve their language skills while taking an in-depth look into Spanish culture by registering in regular courses, taught in English, at the University of Alicante (UA). Over a seven-week period, students take a Spanish language course to facilitate their connection with the host language. Additionally, students enroll in three courses through UA, allowing them to immerse into the UA system by taking content courses with host national and international students. Elective classes are available in a wide variety of subject areas such as Arts & Humanities, Economics & Business, Science & Health Sciences, and Education, allowing students to earn credits toward their major or fulfill additional graduation requirements.
Located in southeastern Spain, the historic Mediterranean port of Alicante is the principal city of Spain's world-renowned Costa Blanca. Alicante is built around a natural harbor, and Mount Bencantil – topped by the iconic Santa Barbara Castle – towers more than 550 feet above the city. Almost 335,000 residents call Alicante home; the city's economy is based largely on tourism to the beaches of Costa Blanca. Explore life Alicante-style while strolling down the palm-lined promenade of Esplanada de España, enjoying tapas at one of Alicante's many outdoor cafes, wandering through the eclectic boutiques and shops in the city center, and discovering Costa Blanca's blue-water beaches.
Get involved in Alicante culture during an exciting week of parades, food, and live music in the streets as you celebrate Hogueras de San Juan, originally a celebration of the Summer Solstice. Join the 300,000 locals who participate in the one-day pilgrimage to the Monastery de Santa Faz, Spain's second-largest pilgrimage. Alicante also hosts a multitude of other cultural activities including Carnaval, Holy Week, the Medieval Market, the Alicante Film and International Jazz Festival, and many more.
